Skip the Multiplex: 7 Pokémon Movies Streaming Right Now That Outclass Most Blockbusters

There's a running joke among anime fans that the Pokémon movies are "just extended episodes." Anyone who's actually sat down with the best of them knows that's nonsense. These films have tackled grief, environmental collapse, genetic ethics, and the end of the world — often with more sincerity than anything at the local AMC.

Here are seven worth your evening, all findable on major US streaming platforms in HD. (Catalogs rotate, so double-check your service of choice before you hit play.)

1. Pokémon: The First Movie — Mewtwo Strikes Back

The one that started it all, and still the strangest: a clone Pokémon having an existential crisis while clones fight originals in a storm-battered fortress. The theatrical cut is famously muddled by dub edits, but the emotional core — the "life can't be all bad" monologue, the tearful clone standoff — still lands.

Watch this before: Nothing. Go in cold. It hits harder that way.

2. Pokémon 3: The Movie — Spell of the Unown

A lonely girl's reality-warping wishes literally rewrite the world, and Ash gets trapped in a crystal cathedral while Entei — a legendary built from a child's imagination of her father — does the kidnapping. It's a movie about grief and loneliness wearing a monster-movie costume. Genuinely underrated.

Watch this after: Any episode with Ash's mom. Ouch.

3. Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

The franchise's best pure adventure film. A time-displaced Lucario with trust issues, a floating tree palace, and a third act that will absolutely wreck you. Lucario's backstory with Sir Aaron is one of the most affecting pieces of writing the franchise has ever produced.

Watch this before: Literally anything. It's self-contained and near-perfect.

4. Pokémon Heroes

Set in a canal city that's Venice with the serial numbers filed off, this one is shorter, quieter, and gorgeous. Two thief sisters, a legendary pair, and an ending that sparked decades of fan debate. It's the most European-feeling Pokémon movie, and the animation still holds up beautifully.

Watch this after: A rainy evening. Trust us on the vibe.

5. Pokémon: I Choose You!

The 20th-anniversary reboot that retells Ash's origin with alternate-universe rules — and one ending so divisive it split the fandom down the middle. Whether you love it or hate it, it's the most discussable Pokémon film ever made, and it looks stunning in HD.

Watch this before: Brush up on the original series so you can catch every reference being gleefully subverted.

6. Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai

The start of the Sinnoh trilogy and the franchise's most ambitious sci-fi: two legendary Pokémon waging war across dimensions, time literally collapsing, and a misunderstood Darkrai who might be the hero nobody believes in. The space-time imagery is genuinely imaginative in ways big-budget Hollywood rarely attempts.

Watch this before: Episodes 1–2 of the Sinnoh arc, if you want the full context. Not required, though.

7. Pokémon: The Power of Us

The most recent entry on this list, and its most socially conscious — a festival town, a con artist looking for redemption, and a story about community over individual heroics. It's the closest Pokémon has come to a proper ensemble film.

Watch this after: A long day. It's the cinematic equivalent of a warm blanket.

The Bottom Line

The best Pokémon movies share a secret: they treat kids like adults and adults like kids. No ironic winking, no filler songs — just sincere stories about connection, loss, and the weird bond between people and creatures. That's more than most summer tentpoles can say.

So tonight, skip the algorithm's third attempt at selling you a superhero reboot. Mewtwo's waiting.
